Lostock Hall Academy Year 11’s and teachers took part in a cycling marathon to raise money for Lewis Balyckyi Trust Fund.

The adopted charity for the 2011-12 Lostock Hall Academy Year 11 cohort has been the Lewis Balyckyi Trust Fund. Raising money for such an important fund has been fully supported by all members of the Year Group and indeed the whole school, both pupils and staff alike. The main fund raising event which took place this year has been the ‘Spinning Bike Marathon’.

A number of Year 11 pupils led by Will Thom (Head Boy) and Christie Green (Head Girl) and assisted by Oliver Ballard, Brad Loram and Tom Galland worked with the Lostock Hall PE Department to organise the cycle marathon. The event took place on Friday 23rd March and run in conjunction with ‘Sport Relief day’. A number of spinning bikes were loaned for the day and a volunteer register was drawn up in advance, all of whom were tasked with raising funds through sponsorship.

The challenge was to keep all 8 bikes in motion for the entire day. A host of pupils and staff had signed up to complete one hour slots which initially sounded easy enough. It soon became apparent however that the task in hand would be much tougher than originally expected! The range of cycling experience varied from the absolute beginner to the more experienced but all that mattered on the day was that the spinning bikes were kept in motion. All pupils involved on the day were superb in terms of completing the challenge with some visibly tired legs but with no real complaints evident!

All pupils and staff involved would like to extend our gratitude to Mr and Mrs Balyckyi who from the outset supported the organisation of the event. Year 11 pupils were also honoured that they both took the time to come into school to complete the final session in what can only be described by that time as ‘sweaty conditions’ in the school gym! Thank you also again to Mr Balyckyi for attending the Year 11 Leavers Assembly to receive the cheque for £669.84, generated through the cycle marathon. Finally thank you also to Mrs Balyckyi for her personal message of thanks to Year 11 for organising the event and also for the promise to support young riders from Lostock Hall Academy cycling club through the provision of additional safety equipment financed through the Lewis Balyckyi Trust Fund.
